The role of Corpus analysis in esp syllabus design

During the academic year 2004 / 05 the pre-service teachers attending the course on ESP at SSIS of University of Cagliari as a final project had to create a corpus on a variety of English for Specific Purposes. They carried out a quantitative and qualitative analysis on the linguistic features of each corpus and the results of their analysis were then the basis of a syllabus design on the chosen ESP variety.

Each of the following articles follows a precise step by step procedure, where at first a statistical analysis of the corpus is carried out, finalized at the constitution of a core vocabulary.

Then, through the analysis of the collocation of the most often used items, a discussion on the particular use of some modals, verbs, nouns and phrases.

We hope that the articles here published may be a further resource to teachers that would like to know more on the varieties of the English language.
