Clil Unit on Blood: Components, Blood Types, Functions and Disease

 

 

 

Rationale

 

This unit is aimed at students of fifth class of Liceo Scientifico, and covers one topic of the curriculum of Science; the structure, the types, and functions/dysfunctions of blood.

The starting material results from the combination of two different texts found in two websites. The reason of this choice is due to the fact that the teacher wants to give students a complete explanation of the topic.

In order to support students’ learning, the document has been transformed and integrated with interacting materials to visually and auditory help the learners.

 

 

Scaffolding stages

The original text as undergone three different stages of elaboration in order to offer visual, auditory and language support to the students.

 

 

Stage 1 - Text formatting

Paragraphs or sentences carrying secondary information have been removed. Headings have been provided, paragraph shortened and keywords formatted in bold.

Whole paragraphs have been transcoded into visuals, so as to simplify the communication of the concepts.

Synonyms have been added, further paragraphs have been reduced or eliminated.

Activities

In order to support learning some interactive tests have been created. There purpose is to have students do something with the new concepts been taught to them.

The tests have been gathered into a Tests Table of Contents, and it is possible to navigate from one to the other.

In order to support the students with the learning of new specific vocabulary a listening and gap - filling activity has been created using an Audio Editor and Hot Potatoes .
