The
Vetunimi project is an exploration of the application of three dimensional,
virtual environments focused on e-learning within the scientific field.
The rapidly growing demand for distant learning is leading to the adotpion
of new computer based technologies. The aim is to achieve a new learning
process based on assisted self-training. The RenderWare Scripting Language
and the ActiveWorlds Browser © allow new communication and learning
features to be applied to the creation of tutorials and simulations. The
Vetunimi virtual laboratory includes an area where it is possible to explore
a cytologic staining technique and the functionality of a spectrophotometer
used for standard biochemical analysis. Other applications in different
fields are also discussed.
The interactive
virtual environment to be found at Ventunimi not only allows a virtual
contact among distang people, and so an exchange of information in real
time, but also the visualization and manipolation of the virtual objects.
The objective is to achieve an instrument that might be a complementary
aid to the normal learning and studyng process.
Has this experiment
in veterinary any interest for other subjects? Natually, between a laboratory
of History and one of Medicine there is one thing in common, and it is
the same method, the way to know things, the intuitive design of the space,
the dynamic possibility to change things over time, and the real possibility
to establish contacts with realities otherwise not easily accessible.
